The Next Big Thing: Suburban Sprawl in Collin County

The Northern Texas Collin County is experiencing exponential growth. Some expect Collin County, once replete with farmland and animals grazing on the native Blackland Prairie, to grow to greater than four million inhabitants by 2040. Nature is falling prey to Collin County developers razing trees and prairie for financial gain. Inspiration and Brockdale are two large subdivisions crowding the lake, streams and forests. Infrastructure projects cause traffic snarls and rutted roads. Lavon Lake, the primary water supply for the area, is under stress and becoming polluted. To what end should we allow “progress” to continue?

Dear John

Human “progress” is manifest in many ways- social justice, equal rights, advancement of the arts, invention. Expansion of cities and towns into our natural areas is another form of “progress”.  Often, the first site at a new development is the portable toilet. As an extension of this logic, the portable toilet can be considered the de facto marker of “progress”. Certainly symbolism abounds with use of this logic.
